Award Criteria and eligibility

Applications are invited from PhD candidates and post-doctoral researchers in their first post based at a UK University. Candidates must be using UK Data Service data in their research.


  • Use of UK Data Service data in research
  • Cross-sectoral partnerships
  • Public engagement
  • New impactful data methodologies
  • An expressed focus on impact
  • Inter-disciplinarity
  • Evidenced by conference presentations, use of social media, corroboration and published outputs developed to date

Method of application

All completed application forms must include the following fields:

Written Statement (Maximum 2000 words): Please provide a written statement in which you clearly indicate how you meet the above criteria.

Host institution Statement of Support (Maximum 500 words): This should be written by an academic/professional services colleague in a senior leadership/management role or the applicant’s PhD supervisor and based on first-hand working experiences.

Brief biography (Maximum 1000 words): All applications must include a brief recent CV.

Fellows’ obligations

  • Agreement to publication of professional biography and photograph
  • Producing one blog post each per quarter for the Data Impact Blog
  • To develop at least one case study for promotion on the UK Data Service website of REF-able quality, in association with the Service and their host institution
  • Fellows would also be expected to become practitioners of and advocates for data citation


Applications must be supported by a statement of support from either the candidate’s PhD supervisor or if in a post-doctoral role, line manager from their host institution, detailing the candidate’s suitability for the Fellowship and how they meet the criteria, their ability to meet the terms and conditions of the programme and achievements to date.

Process and Decision Making

Applications will be assessed by a selection panel and awards will be made according to how closely applicants demonstrate that they meet the award criteria.
